HeelanHammer

HeelanHammer is a new UK Warhammer Fantasy podcast. At the moment they have only done one episode. I really enjoyed listening to episode one that I thought it worthy of a mention. The hosts are Dan Heelan and Wayne Kemp, two guys from the Portsmouth UK area. Hoping to hear a lot more from these guys in the future.

Old Base Sizes & Unit Strengths

I found this Reference Sheet for Base Sizes and Unit Strength on the web. It is a very old document dated 2003, so please take this information with a pinch of salt.

For example Chaos Dwarfs and Dogs of War are mentioned and no Ogre Kingdoms, must have been published prior to the release of the Ogre Kingdoms army.

However this could be useful for someone building a Chaos Dwarfs or Dogs of War army.

Army Roster Template

I have compiled two Army Rosters for both my Warriors of Chaos and Ogres Rosters 1500 lists. These are printed on a A5 size pieces of card. I used to print army rosters in A4 size, but after listening to an episide of the baddice podcast they mentioned printing A5. I thought what a good idea so now print to A5 size, saves some space on the gaming table.

Warriors of Chaos 1500 Army Roster

I have deliberately smudged out all the information which could infringe upon the Games Workshop IP copyright protection, so there is not a lot to see.

However you can download a blank Army Roster Template, right on the images below and select 'Save Link As' to download the template rosters.

Battle for Skull Pass, The Novel

I have really enjoyed reading this short novel. I particularly liked the paragraph where a drunk Dragon Slayer was described as a Flagon Slayer. Also who would think that a cowpat could cause the Goblins to fail an animosity test, brilliant!

The novel really did fit into the world portrayed by the Battle for Skull Pass box set, for instances why aren't there any Squigs in the box set, and why does it contain a pony drawn grudge cart?
Read this novel to find out!

This was my first Black Library novel, I enjoy it so much will be purchasing some more Black Library Warhammer Fanstasy novels.

Roll Call Miniature

I painted this 120mm scale Napoleonic miniature about 12 years ago, back in 1997.

The miniature is from Roll Call Military Miniatures, they were a Nuneaton UK based company which produced resin miniatures in 120mm scale. The company seems to be no longer trading, and I don't think their products are available via any other manufacturer.

It is painted using Humbrol Enamel paints. The miniature is looking a bit tatty, and the painting style a bit outdated as I was unaware of some painting techniques such as washing and dry brushing back then. Therefore I will be giving this miniature a bit of a make over during the coming months.

Painting Ogres Update

My two Maneaters, two Hunters along with four Sabretusks are now all built and primed ready for painting. I am going to give myself two weeks to complete painting on the Maneaters, and three weeks to complete painting on the two Hunters and four Sabretusks. This gives me a week spare to hit my target of completing my 2500 points Orgre Kingdoms army by the 21st June. I have already varnished the other miniatures in the army, just need some more cans of Testors Dull Cote to complete.

White Dwarf & Direct Debit

It seems that a lot of people in the hobby don't purchase White Dwarf, either because of the price or content. But I quite like reading it every month. I have purchased it every month for the past couple of years.

On the Games Workshop website the cost of one and two year subscriptions are £40 and £76 respectively, thats a one-off cost. If I purchase the next 12 issues over the counter it will cost me £54.

Direct Debit gives me the first three issues for £5 then £9 per quarter, that 1 free issue every quarter. Therefore the cost spread over 12 months is £32 for the first year and £36 for the second year. Direct Debit gives me a saving of £40 over two years against the over the counter price, and a saving of £8 on the two year subscription.

Who is there right mind would buy the one-off subscriptions, when direct debit is a better offer? Or am I missing something here?

40K Catachan Army

My wife bought me a Warhammer 40K Imperial Guard Catachan Battalion box set for Christmas 2007. I wanted to include pictures of all my painted miniatures on this blog, so have included these miniatures as well.

I also purchased and painted a few metal models, one Captain, two Officers, two Ogryns and some snipers. I especially wanted to paint some of the new Ogryn miniatures, these looked awesome in White Dwarf. It was painting the Ogryns that gave me the inspiration to build an Ogre Kingdoms army in Warhammer Fantasy, painting a larger size miniature for a change was appealing.

To make this a complete and valid army I have about 25 more squad miniatures to paint for another troop choice, and will need an additional Ogryn to build a proper size Ogryn squad. Also I especially like the new Catachan command squad released this month with the new Imperial Guard Codex, so I may purchase this box set as well.

May be one day I will complete this army, probably to around the 1000 point mark. But at the moment my focus is purely on my Warhammer Fantasy miniatures.

Testors Dull Cote

Since Games Workshop stopped selling a Matt Varnish, which was excellent. I have struggled to find a comparable product. I did try Humbrol Matt Cote, but found that for metal miniatures this left a sticky residue which remained on the miniature for many weeks. I even had to strip and re-paint my Ogre Kingdoms Tyrant, because the sticky residue which was still on the miniature for weeks after being applied.

Eventually found a UK supplier of Testors Matt Varnish in cans and bottles Antenociti's Workshop.

This stuff is excellent even better than the Matt Varnish from Games Workshop. The matt finish is brilliant. I will from now on varnish all my miniatures with the Games Workshop gloss varnish first and then spray on a coat of Testors Dull Cote and it really does matt the gloss finish down very nicely.

All of my Ogres are finished using this method.

Battle for Skull Pass, The Novel

I have purchased my first Black Library novel today whilst on a trip to Warhammer World in Nottingham.  The Battle for Skull Pass The Novel by Nathan Long.

High in the mountains, the dwarfs fight an eternal battle against their greenskin enemies, the orcs and the goblins. When the ambitious Dagskar Earscrapper sets his sights on taking Skull Pass, the conflict between goblin and dwarf is re–ignited. Can the stoic dwarfs, led by Godri Thunderbrand, fend off the greenskin invaders and save the fledgling settlement of Karak Grom? Or will the banner of the Crooked Moon boys fly high above Skull Pass?

After reading the novel I will post a review.  I am not the fastest when it comes to reading, and have a lot on at the moment so this may be a while.
